It is an indisputable fact that Hong Kong is an ageing society.
 
According to the 2016 census, the Hong Kong population was 7.43 million people with the median age at 43.  The proportion aged 65 or above hit a record high of 16 per cent, is expected to reach 20 per cent in 2021 and will ramp up significantly over the next 20 years.
 
Hong Kong has the highest life expectancy of any country or territory in the world today – overall life expectancy in Hong Kong is c.84 years.  Given that 11% are under 15 years of age (birth rate has also fallen sharply), our social structure is moving towards the age of the “silver hair”.
 
And the state of the working population…
Based on data in 2016, the workforce aged 65 or over has more than doubled over the past five years.  This is in part driven by delay of young people entering the work-force due to increased opportunities in pursuing post-secondary education.
 
In addition, medical advancements and better knowledge and acceptance of the role of a proper diet and regular exercise has pushed back the concept of old age in the past, allowing the experienced working population to remain in the office.  The evidence suggests that people are not only living longer but are staying young longer.
